IEC embraces multi-junction PV devices

22 June 2017

The IEC has added to its 60904 series a new standard, IEC 60904-8-1:2017, "Photovoltaic devices - Part 8-1: Measurement of spectral responsivity of multi-junction photovoltaic (PV) devices". This provides important information on the specific test requirements for multi-junction PV devices, for which guidance could only be previously sought in ASTM E2236 - 10(2015).

Multi-junction PV devices consist of two or more series-connected junctions, each of which responding to a different spectral range. The measurement procedure allows the measurement of the spectral response (EQE) of each junction by appropriate light and voltage bias. Guidance on correction of measurement spectral response due to deviations from the true spectral response due to shunting and / or luminescent coupling is also provided.
